Overview

This Level 2 Diploma will guide and assess development of knowledge and skills relating to children’s care, learning and development (early learning and childcare, and the learning development and support services). The qualification confers occupational competence for childcare, learning and development in Northern Ireland. This qualification prepares you to work with children and young people, under supervision, in a range of settings, including nurseries and day care. Work placement would be completed in a range of settings including nurseries and daycare.

To complete this part-time course, you will attend College one evening or day per week and spend 3 days on work placement. Your practical skills will be assessed in practice by a workplace assessor.

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1st July in the year of proposed entry to the course.

The College will review the qualifications and/or experience held by applicants and will consider whether this profile shows an ability to progress towards a level 2 qualification.
Applicants should normally have a minimum of a full level 1 qualification (4 GCSEs at grades D-G, including English and Mathematics at grades D-F or equivalent). Applicants presenting with a Junior Cert qualification should have attained mostly higher-level subjects.
All applicants must be able to demonstrate at interview that they have a satisfactory level of fluency in English – both written and spoken. The College reserves the right to refer any applicant to appropriate English language or literacy classes until their level of fluency in written and spoken English is sufficient to allow participation in other areas of study.
The College may also use other evidence provided as part of the application process.
You must provide a reference from current employer/academic setting.
You must secure and complete a work placement throughout the duration of the qualification before certification.
All learners must complete an Access NI check and additional vetting as required per setting i.e. Medical, Reference checks and Social Service Checks. Applicants and learners will be subject to the Fitness to Practice Policy.

Support Children's Personal Care and Nutrition.
Supporting Children's Development.
Supporting Children's Play, Learning and Development.
Contribute to the Support of Children with Disabilities and/or Special Needs.

As this qualification is both theory and practice led, assessment will be carried out through a range of methods including, written and practical assignments and professional discussions.

Minimum of 350 hours of placement must be completed. The requirement cannot be met by time spent with children within a learner’s family/extended family, babysitting or through other informal arrangements.

Learners must demonstrate competence in knowledge and skills in order to achieve this programme.

On successful completion, you may progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development or the Level 3 Certificate Supporting Teaching and Learning.
