We are excited to bring to you a new Level 2 Traineeship in Children's Care, Learning & Development.*

This is a 1 year full-time course incorporating knowledge and skills to support your knowledge and practice working with children aged 0-5yrs 11months.

This qualification prepares you to work with children and young people, under supervision, in a range of settings, including nurseries and day care. As part of this qualification you will spend time on placement within nurseries and day care settings, working under the supervision of highly experienced staff.

*The Level 2 Traineeship is currently subject to approval. There will be a Level 2 Diploma in Children's Care, Learning & Development available at SRC commencing September 2023.

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1st July in the year of proposed entry to the course.
The College will review the qualifications and/or experience held by applicants and will consider whether this profile shows an ability to progress towards a level 2 qualification.
Applicants will be required to hold a minimum of a level 1 qualification defined as 4 GCSEs at grades D-G. For this subject, this should include Maths Grade D and English Grade D. On enrolment the applicant will undertake an initial assessment which will confirm whether they should enter the full Traineeship or the Preparatory Phase. Applicants whose diagnostic assessment indicates they are below Level 1 Essential Skills will be supported to consider an alternative programme of study as this does not meet the NI Traineeship requirements.
Applicants presenting with a Junior Cert qualification should have attained mostly higher-level subjects.
All applicants must be able to demonstrate at interview that they have a satisfactory level of fluency in English – both written and spoken. The College reserves the right to refer any applicant to appropriate English Language or Literacy classes until their level of fluency in written and spoken English is sufficient to allow participation in other areas of study.
Attendance at Pre-Entry Advice Sessions (individual or group interviews) is advisable for the selection of candidates in all level 2 full-time courses. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate that they are committed and motivated to achieve this course.
The College may also use other evidence provided as part of the application process.
Applicants must provide a reference from their current employer/academic setting.
Applicants will secure and complete a work placement throughout the duration of the qualification before certification.
All learners must complete an Access NI check and additional vetting as required per setting i.e. Medical, reference checks and social service checks. Applicants and learners will be subject to the Fitness to Practice Policy.

As this qualification is both theory and practice led, assessment will be carried out through a range of methods including written and practical assignments and professional discussions.

Placement in a relevant early years setting is required. This requirement cannot be met by time spent with children within a learner’s family/extended family, babysitting or through other informal arrangements.

Learners may be required to undertake Essential Skills numeracy and literacy alongside this course.

To achieve the Traineeship, successful completion of Essential Skills numeracy and literacy at level 2 is a requirement (for learners who do to have C or above in GCSE in English and Maths) alongside the successful achievement of knowledge and skills.

On successful completion, you may progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development or the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
