Overview

The objectives of the OCN NI Level 3 suite of Laboratory Skills courses are to enable the learner to gain a range of skills and knowledge applicable to different science-based laboratory occupations.

The completion of this unit will enable the learner to understand health and safety within a laboratory environment. The learner will also be able to complete risk assessments and handle and dispose of relevant materials.

Learners must be at least 16 years of age and have achieved GCSE English and Mathematics or equivalent.

Learners should also have a level 2 qualification in a science related discipline and/or two years relevant industry laboratory experience.

Upon completion of this unit learner will:

Be able to carry out workplace risk assessments.
Be able to follow health and safety procedures for scientific or technical activities.
Be able to safely handle and dispose of materials and waste.
Be able to communicate effectively in written format within a scientific workplace.
Be able to maintain, calibrate and use scientific instruments.

The following assessment method/s may be used to ensure all learning outcomes and assessment criteria are fully covered:

Portfolio of evidence
Practical demonstration/assignment
Coursework
E-assessment

Successful completion of this unit will award learners 5 credits. Learners may undertake additional units to work towards the full OCN NI Level 3 Certificate in Laboratory Skills, which requires a minimum of 15 credits.

The OCN NI Level 3 suite of Laboratory Skills qualifications will enable learners to progress to higher level science qualifications and/or into science related occupations.
