Overview

This qualification is ideal if you are working with or planning to work with children and young people with special needs. This unit will provide you with an understanding of the concept of special needs and current attitudes and values. The qualification is targeted at individuals who wish to pursue a career in the area of working with children and young people with special needs or those requiring further training in this area.

This is an online course and therefore students will require access to a computer.

This course is fully funded through the SkillUP Flexible Skills Fund. All applicants must meet the entry requirements outlined below.

There are no specific entry requirements. However, candidates should either be working with children/young people with special needs or have an interest in working in this area.

This course is funded through the SkillUP Flexible Skills Fund. All applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

Applicants must be 18 years of age on or before the course start date
Applicants must be eligible to work in Northern Ireland
Applicants must be ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or are a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK
Candidates are only permitted to complete a maximum of two free courses at a time

Learning Outcomes within this qualification include:

Understand special needs
Understand factors which affect learning
Understand how to support individuals with special needs
Understand the roles and responsibilities of professionals working in the special needs area
Understand the principles and practice of advocacy

Assessment will take the form of completion of an electronic work booklet, assessed internally and moderated internally and externally by the awarding body.
